This image was a long time in the making. I went to Mobile, Alabama on a day trip last July and while driving through the city and its outskirts I noticed a little cove where dozens of pelicans had gathered. This area was right between Interstate 10 and the causeway. These birds are pretty cool to look at and I wanted a picture! It was too hot to stop that day (around 100 with high humidity) so I put getting a picture of these birds on my photo wish list.
Finally the opportunity came to go through Mobile once more as we drove to Walt Disney World. We left MS very early that morning and were just getting into Mobile with the dawn. We made a quick stop at the cove and there were dozens of pelicans all roosting on the mooring posts. It was a cold morning (just about 35) and just awakening it seemed.
This bird was friendly enough and he gave me a few poses, but this is the one I liked best. The light, to me, was perfect at this moment. The sun had colored the horizon with the usual pinks and yellow-oranges before rising and lo and behold...I got my shot. One to cross off my wish list.
